JABC Expanding Popular Event that Exposes Students to Tech Careers
JA British Columbia (JABC) will host the second annual JABC TechWorks, a full-day program that shows students the career possibilities in the booming technology sector. To be held at Science World at TELUS World of Science on January 16th 2018, 400 Grade 9 and 10 students from high schools throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley will attend. TELUS will be returning as the Presenting Sponsor and will be joined by other JABC partners from the technology and professional services fields.
The morning program will consist of engaging speakers, demos and several interactive periods. The afternoon program will include breakout sessions, pre-selected according to each student’s interests. Topics include Women in Technology, Virtual Reality, Lifesciences and more.
The tech sector in BC is growing by 6% per year and has transformed the business landscape. The demand for skilled workers is high and it is estimated that 35,000 tech jobs will need to be filled by 2021. Now more than ever, Canadian youth need to be made aware of the dynamic nature of technology careers and the knowledge and skills required to attain these rewarding jobs.
JABC has partnered with many BC technology firms to develop this technology-focused, work readiness program event. Using the JA Economics for Success program as a precursor, the event builds on the in-school program to inspire students to plan their education and career paths for a promising future.
