Each year, JABC is very pleased to offer a number of awards to recognize outstanding student performance in a JA program.

All secondary and post-secondary students in British Columbia who have taken a JA program are eligible to apply. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we are able to give away thousands of dollars worth of awards annually.

The process is simple! Please review the eligibility requirements for each award below and then apply online.

Individual Awards

Oratory and presentation skills are keys to success in business and community leadership. This award recognizes achievement in the development of speaking and presentation skills. It is open to any senior-secondary or post-secondary student who has participated in a JA program within the past 5 years.  

This year, up to four (4) students will be awarded $2,500 each, to further their post-secondary education. Award winners will be invited to make a one-minute speech at the annual Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremonies to be held on May 30, 2023.  

Application  

Applicants are asked to submit a 90-second video to showcase their presentation skills and a transcript of their speech. Applicants are asked to answer one of the following questions in their speech: 

  • What did you enjoy the most about participating in JA? 
  • What was your biggest surprise while participating in JA? 
  • What was your most memorable JA moment? 
  • How did participating in JA help you to develop your skills and prepare you for your future career? 

The awards are adjudicated by senior members of the business community including the sponsors of these award, JABC board members or other JABC partners.

The Junior Entrepreneur award recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding business acumen, growth, leadership and entrepreneurial spirit while participating in JA Company Program. This award is open to those who held executive positions in their student company during the 2022-23 school year.   

Four executives will be awarded $2500 each to further their post-secondary education. Student executives must be nominated by their JA Company Program mentor(s) or host teacher.   

Award winners will participate in a live interview about their experience at the annual Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremonies on May 30, 2023.

Nominators are asked to answer the following questions: 

  1. What was the nominee’s greatest achievement during their time in JA Company Program that demonstrated their business acumen, leadership or entrepreneurial spirit?  
  2. What is the nominee’s greatest strength or quality that will benefit them as an entrepreneur or business leader in the future?  
  3. Why do you think the nominee deserves the JABC Junior Entrepreneur Award? 

The awards are adjudicated by senior members of the business community including the sponsors of these award, JABC board members or other JABC partners.

This award recognizes a self-identifying Indigenous OR rural (outside Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Greater Victoria) OR new immigrant student (born outside Canada) Junior Achiever who has demonstrated significant growth in business skills, learning skills, leadership skills and/or entrepreneurial skills.

The winning student will receive a $2,500 scholarship towards post-secondary education.

This award’s purpose is to inspire and encourage young women to lead at the highest levels, with heart. The Jan Bell-Irving Award recognizes a female Junior Achiever who demonstrates the ambition to lead and the ability to do so with collaboration and kindness.

The winning student will receive $2,500 to further their post-secondary education.

This award recognizes two students from the Columbia Basin who have demonstrated how a JA program significantly improved their work readiness skills and positively impacted their future. (For Columbia Basin region, please see Columbia Basin Trust Region Map at Ourtrust.org/about/basinmap)

Two winning students will receive $1,250 to invest in their future.

Student Company Awards

JA Student Companies can complete one application to apply for both awards.

Deadline: May 5, 2023. One application will be used for both awards.

This award recognizes excellence in teamwork and cooperation, creativity and innovation, profitability and viability, and outstanding planning and operation of a JA Student Company. The winning JA Student Company will receive an award of $3,000 for the team.

The team will also be entered into the national JA Canada Company of the Year award. The National award winner will represent JA Canada at the international JA Americas Company of the Year competition.

This award recognizes the JA Student Company that demonstrates the most innovation in their business. Innovative products, services or business models will be judged by a panel of experts.

The winning JA Student Company will receive an award of $3,000 for the team.

This award is generously supported by the Province of British Columbia through Ministry of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation.

Mentorship Opportunities

JABC is pleased to partner with CDL-Vancouver to offer a unique mentorship opportunity to recognize high school girls participating in JA Company Program. 

The intention of the CDL Apprentice Program program is to address the gender gap by offering an engaging learning experience for female-identified students 14-18 years of age who have a curiosity for STEM-related topics and a keen interest in how science and technology are transforming the world and the opportunities available to the next generation of leaders.

Learning to Lead™ is a leadership program open to Grade 10-12 girls, transgender, and non-binary youth. Participants gain confidence through a series of interactive workshops and activities. They leave the program with greater self-awareness, and the inspiration to take on new challenges and opportunities. This interactive program invites young women to develop a leadership mindset in a supportive and fun environment.
