January 25, 2021- Meet alumna Alice Ko, a second-year UBC business student, local community volunteer, and JABC volunteer.
Alice was part of the JA Company Program in both her 11th and 12th grades at Burnaby Central Secondary in Burnaby B.C. In her first year, her team launched Canada Box, a product that brought together a collection of Canadian classic items in a unique gift box. In her second year, her student company, Joule, created hand-crafted pendant necklaces to raise awareness for sustainable energy. She said, “Being a part of JABC has shown me how much students can achieve with some support and inspiration.”
In 2018 Alice received the JABC Student Award for Oratory & Presentation Skills and spoke at the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame Gala. She also presented at the 2018 BC CEO Awards on behalf of JABC. In 2019 she received the national Peter Mansbridge Positive Change Award and spoke at the 2019 Canadian Business Hall of Fame Gala Event in Toronto. She said, “From speaking in front of my school admin, full of nerves, to presenting in front of many business leaders, again full of nerves, one thing changed. That was the confidence I had knowing that I was supported by an incredibly hardworking network of JA peers, staff, and supporters who all believed in me.”
What advice would she give youth? “Show your enthusiasm. Be open to opportunities and don’t be afraid to reach out and meet new people. Through JA, I’ve met many inspiring students, staff, and business leaders in the industry. Some of the best conversations I’ve had during my experience were ones where I gathered the courage to say hello.”
