JA Programs

JA British Columbia (JABC) has been proudly serving students across British Columbia for 65 years. Through alliances with educators and the dedication of volunteers, youth in grades 4-12 receive important educational programs and experiences thanks to the generosity of JABC donors and sponsors. JA Programs focus on financial literacy, work-readiness and entrepreneurship.

JA Programs are:

  • Provided free of charge
  • Available to all schools, communities & organizations
  • Presented in-class or online
  • Offered with flexible delivery options, including volunteer-led, educator-led, student self-directed or a blend of these methods
  • Aligned with B.C.’s curriculum with most also available in French
  • Available all school year
  • Supplemented with printed or digital resources at no cost
  • Delivered in 3-5 hours with optional extended activities available

Programs by Level:

More Than Money

  • Grades 4-5
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Introduces students to the role of money, how it can be earned, saved & spent. Students develop a basic business plan, identify start-up costs, track financial gains & losses, & explore important decision making.

  • Grades 5-6

  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Helps students explore how businesses are created and what makes them thrive. Using games & multimedia, students learn about innovation, start-ups, self employment, & how businesses impact the community and environment.

  • Grades 6-8
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Gives students the hands-on learning experience of planning a business. Using a business model canvas, students identify their product, target market, resources & more. Optional in-school sale or pitch presentation.

  • Grades 7-9
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Updated: Introduces students to budgeting, investing, the cost of credit, online security & more. This interactive program teaches personal money management skills that students can apply… beginning now. Features Making a Budget & Investing Basics videos + worksheets.

  • Grades 8-10

  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Helps students see the link between education & achieving their goals. Inspires students to plan for success by mapping career clusters, considering post-secondary options & creating a personal budget using an optional regionally-tailored online budgeting tool.

Investment Strategies Program

  • Grades 10-12
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours + online competition
  • Students explore the ways in which people save & invest for their future. Students research stocks, build a portfolio, learn investment terms, ethics & more. The program culminates with an optional online stock market simulation.

Be Entrepreneurial

  • Grades 10-12
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours + business pitch
  • Being entrepreneurial can start while you’re in school! Students develop a business idea & basic plan that includes identifying their competitive advantage. The program culminates with an optional business pitch competition.
  • Students are eligible for JABC and JA Canada awards and scholarships and Discover your Pitch

Entrepreneurial Trades

  • Grades 10-12
  • Online
  • Self directed: 4-6 hours
  • In this self-directed online program, students learn why businesses succeed & fail and what it takes to become an entrepreneur in the trades industry. Students explore business concepts including planning, funding, & marketing.

Company Program

  • Grades 10-12
  • In classroom, with option to include volunteer support
  • Instructional time: 10-16 weeks, core & optional modules
  • A hands-on experience that inspires students to create & operate their own business venture through collaboration. Includes an option to develop an online store with Canadian ecommerce provider Shopify.
  • Students are eligible for JABC and JA Canada awards and scholarships and Discover your Pitch

Personal Finance

  • Grades 11-12
  • Online or in classroom
  • Instructional time: 4 hours
  • Students learn key elements of personal finance such as spending wisely, budgeting, saving, investing& using credit. By the end of the program, students will have a personal finance plan & clear goals for their financial security.

JABC TechWorks

  • Grades 9-12
  • Students are introduced to the vast career opportunities in B.C.’s tech sector & beyond in this 60-90 minute live, multi-class program. Speakers & demos showcase the latest in tech & provide guidance on educational pathways for students. Educators receive access to an exclusive video library & pre/post activities.

  • Grades 6-12
  • Students explore & refine their career goals with the help of a panel of guest speakers from a variety of industries. This 40-60 minute live, moderated, multi-class program includes a Q&A plus optional online student self directed pre/post program activities. May also be coordinated small scale, on demand for a single class.

  • Grades 10-12
  • Prerequisite: Be Entrepreneurial or Company Program
  • An investor pitch competition where students pitch their business idea to a panel of judges & compete for cash prizes. Features live, interactive, virtual
    workshops & coaching that helps students hone their business plan, pitch & presentation.

Stock Market Challenge

  • Grades 10-12
  • Prerequisite: Investment Strategies Program
  • An online stock market simulation, linked to live data from North American stock markets, that engages students from across Canada to apply investing principles as they manage their own portfolio. This program is a JA Canada experience.
